Welcome to our first Mactaggart & Mickel and YOU Blog!
We’ll be sharing regular updates here about employee news, industry news and our people’s stories and achievements across the business.
We are delighted to launch our new Mactaggart & Mickel & YOU dedicated site just a few weeks after achieving the coveted Investors in People Platinum accreditation – the first housebuilder in Scotland to do so and the second in the UK. This accomplishment is due in no small part to hard work and pursuit of excellence by our whole team of inspirational and dedicated people.
Would you like to find out about what makes us an Employer of Choice? Read the interview below with one of our promising young team members, who began with the company as an apprentice joiner, then became a qualified joiner with his own apprentice and was recently promoted to Trainee Assistant Site Manager.
An interview with Shaun Kennedy, Trainee Assistant Site Manager
1. How long have you been with the company and what’s your experience been like working here?
I have been with the company since August 2011, 7 years. I started my apprenticeship at the age of 16 straight from school. I remember going for my interview in this big fancy building in town, and I knew from this first impression that this company was the real deal. When I found out that I got the job, I was absolutely thrilled to bits and words couldn't explain it. From then to now my thoughts haven't changed.…. If anything, they have just got better and better!
It is like one big happy family. Mac & Mic treat everyone equally and always go over and above as an employer on everything they do.
2. How does Mactaggart & Mickel Homes differ from other companies?
Having started when I was 16, I personally haven't worked for any other company, but my impression from talking to friends and other sub-contractors on site is that Mactaggart & Mickel is one of the best - if not the best - companies to work for out there. Everyone is always commenting on how good they are to their employees. We get our Christmas dinner party at no cost to ourselves, plus they put together a Comms day every May. At the Comms day, they let us know how the business did in the last financial year and what's coming up in the year ahead. We get employee benefits, for example, the Cycle to Work Scheme, and Westfield Health Cover. It really does feel like one big family who are always looking out for you.
3. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always wanted to be a joiner; I guess dreams do come true. My grandad influenced me heavily on my chosen career path as he worked in the construction industry, and I always wanted to be like him. So I wasn’t going to leave school for just any job. The only way I was leaving was if I got a joinery apprenticeship, and luckily I did, so I snapped at the chance and can happily say I have never looked back.
4. Sum up working with Mactaggart & Mickel in 3 words
It’s an honour!
Shaun is soon to take on his new role as Trainee Assistant Site Manager on one of our sites across Central Scotland.
